Junior surf at East End caters for children of differing ages and abilities starting at Nip Nips (under 7yrs), Nippers (7-9yrs), *NEW* Transition (9yrs and those struggling as rookies or excelling as nippers – as selected by Junior Surf Co-ordinator and Head Coaches), Rookies (10-11yrs) and Cadets (12-14yrs). These age groups are based on the childs age as at midnight on Sept 30th of the current season.
Cadets who are in their second year (13yrs) are also encouraged to become ‘rookie lifeguards’ where they become a member of an East End patrol and spend the season learning about the roles of a patrolling lifeguard. This role is to ensure the transition between being a junior surf member and a member of the senior section of the club is smooth and not too scary.
All groups work on beach safety, water/surf skills, boards (boogie boards for nip nips and paddle boards for nippers and higher), and beach skills (flags and sprints). As the kids progress they will begin to learn skills associated with lifeguarding such as tube rescue, board rescue, basic first aid (recovery position and how to send for help) and the basic aspects of how a patrol is set up.
Our general junior surf sessions for all ages are run on a Sunday morning between 10:30am-12noon. We also provide week day and holiday trainings through out both the season and the off season, see coaches or the junior co-ordinator for more information.
Pool training for all ages is provided on Wednesday nights at the Bell Block Pool 6:30pm.
As we are active in a high risk area we require plenty of assistance from parents of the children involved – the nip nip group requires a ratio of 1adult to 1 child. From nippers and above we require a ratio of 1adult to 5children for water activities. We have a large number of highly experienced coaches and lifeguards who assist us on a weekly basis, however we do require parental assistance also. East End does provide the opportunity for parents to up-skill and become coaches through Introduction to Surf Coaching courses as well as higher level courses.
